Within the PIMES project (FEF program funded by the French Embassy in Lao PDR), the second workshop on bioinformatics was organized by Dr. Thomas Bigot and Dr. Julia Kende (Institut Pasteur, France) at Institut Pasteur du Laos from September 1st to September 11th, 2025. It was attended by scientists from IPL, LOMWRU, NAHL, Lao TPHI and Institut Pasteur du Cambodge. Participants were introduced to bioinformatics concepts, including fundamentals of biology for bioinformaticians, sequence homology, and key concepts such as long-read sequencing, molecular phylogenetics, Bayesian methods, and pathogen discovery. They received a dedicated course on the Galaxy platform and applied several of these topics using Galaxy workflows as well as other bioinformatics tools. In a second part, computational aspects were taught, covering essential computer knowledge, Python programming for bioinformatics, and pipeline construction using command line and Python with Snakemake.
