IPL > Training centre

Training and education activities at IPL are conducted through both the research laboratories and a dedicated Training Centre, designed to strengthen laboratory and public health capacities in Laos and the region.

The Training Centre provides training in laboratory diagnostic procedures, including sample collection, storage and transport of biological specimens, quality assurance, laboratory management, and biosafety practices. Specialised courses are also offered in areas such as vector-borne diseases, rabies diagnostics, and other infectious diseases of public health importance.

The facility includes:

  • a practical teaching laboratory (“wet lab”) equipped with a video-conferencing system for e-learning and remote training;
  • a lecture classroom for theoretical instruction;
  • a Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) laboratory enabling trainees to develop appropriate biosafety practices when handling infectious agents such as dengue, chikungunya, and malaria pathogens.

The Training Centre can host up to 16 trainees simultaneously and supports both IPL staff and external participants working at national, provincial, and district levels. It also serves as a regional platform for biosafety and laboratory capacity strengthening.

Training programmes include short courses in microbiology, serology, molecular biology, biosafety, scientific writing, and related laboratory disciplines.

In addition, the Training Centre regularly hosts regional training activities within the framework of the Institut Pasteur International Network (RIIP). Courses are conducted in English or French, with Lao-language training provided for provincial healthcare personnel when required.
